High School Senior photography Clarkston MI

Another example of High School Senior photography. This Clarkston student came to the studio for the yearbook shot and some additional fun studio photography.  She later decided to add a location shoot to round out her choice of images.

The yearbook shot is pretty basic as far as lighting and posing.  Where we start to have fun, get creative and use some different lighting setup is after.  The portrait lighting is very basic two light setup.  What makes these shots so nice is the students look. I work to get students comfortable and relaxed to bring out the best they can be.  It must be difficult for most student to be thrust in front of a camera and asked to pose and smile with very little experience.  The ring light is a unique piece of photographic lighting equipment that gets very striking looks.  There is a circular strobe tube in a frame and the camera lens goes in the middle.  It makes for an awkward setup.

The location session was shot at the McLaren Healing Garden just off Sashabaw in Clarkston MI. The healing garden is a wonderful gift to the community from MaClaren and is wonderful for portraits and small group photography.  There are flowers blooming just about throughout the year with fountains, seating and paths. The light was not too contrasty with light cloud cover, so I chose not to use any supplemental lights, just fill cards.

High School Senior Pictures

These are High School Senior Pictures of a daughter of a friend to the family.  She really did not want anything more that the mandatory shot in the yearbook and Mom convinced her to at least go out and try.  She was glad we did.

Being from Clarkston, MI the family chose to shoot at Depot Park.  The park has many different places to shoot and is a wonderful venue.  The student had a couple different changes of wardrobe from a jean jacket to a nick dark simple dress and a simple sundress.  I really like the black turtle neck with pearls.

We shot near the gazebo and I did a few shots trying to work the backlit sun into the shots.  We then went across the stream and used one of the huge oak trees as a backdrop.  This student happens to have the prettiest eyes, so I chose to use a very shallow depth of field to highlight the eyes

When do you take senior high school pictures?

When do you take senior high school pictures?  There are a couple answers.  Anytime and before mid to late October.

The easy one is the deadline for yearbook shots.  For our area, Northern Oakland County, Clarkston, Brandon, Lake Orion, Auburn Hills and Waterford, most schools deadline for yearbook image submission is mid to late October.  I think some schools are accepting delivery on CD/DVD (so 1990’s) and I believe all are accepting emailed submission.  All the schools have specific and slightly different size and proportion requirements.  You should have received some yearbook documents that give you your specific datesYour photographer should easily be able to submit the shots for you.  You should give yourself at least a week for image selection and preparation, although it can be done in a couple hours if really needed.  Request a confirmation that your student’s image has satisfactorily been received.

The other answer is anytime.  Most students start getting sessions booked to shoot anywhere from August through November.  August can be warm, but there might be some summer activities you want to include, or you don’t want fall or winter scenes.  Late September and through October is always and great time, with the cooling temperatures and fall colors coming.  If you are into the white stuff or winter activities, you can schedule a winter session.  The only consideration for when is when you need the images. Some families like to include some of the session photography in the students “show off” pages. These pages are typically due a couple weeks after the yearbook deadline.

I have had families shoot sessions as early as July and even as late as the July after the student has graduated.  Shooting one this evening.

What to wear for a yearbook shot

What to wear for a yearbook shot. So you need to get a high school senior yearbook shot.  If you are at a public school, you will need to get the shot to the yearbook yourself (or through the photographer you choose).  If you are at a private school it is likely the school will provide the shot on a photo day.

Most of the requirements are pretty similar for public schools in northern Oakland County Clarkston, Lake Orion, Auburn Hills, Waterford and Brandon.  All request a studio situation, no outdoor shots or backgrounds.  All ask for a simple medium to light grey or blue background, plain or mottled is OK.

Most schools will have female requirements that center around modesty.  Bare shoulders are almost always not allowed and the less cleavage the better.  I like to have the shots more about the student than the wardrobe.  Black top or white tops and anywhere in between are alright for the yearbook.  I try to advise against too bright of colors or strong patterns. Having a female student come right from a hair and makeup appointment works great.

I have not seen any requirements for male student for attire.  Most wear a dress shirt, tie and jacket, some an open collared shirt and some just what they woke up with that morning (joke).  I like to keep jackets, shirts and ties as simple as possible.  Again make the picture about the student not the wardrobe.  There are times when a fine stripe in a shirt or jacket will give digital sensors trouble and create a moire pattern.  Best to get a haircut a few days before the shoot.

One of the most important considerations, does the student feel comfortable and confined in the clothes?  It will show and it makes a difference.  In the end I make recommendations and share my opinion and then we shoot what you want.  They are you pictures.

High School Senior Glamour Shoot

This is a High School Senior Glamour Shoot I did with neighbors and a few of my daughter’s friends.  I had a hair and makeup stylist come in and do the girl’s hair and apply makeup.  In most cases the girls wear little to no makeup, so the amount and style of makeup was a bit unusual for them. In all cases the girls were happy with the results and process.  I think every girl used at least one of the images for prints for part of their senior year experience.

This was a chance for me to play with lighting and working with no models to get the best of them.  I used a florecent ringlight for some of the shots.  I shows an unusual doughnut like reflection in the eye, very even lighting on the face and an unusual reflection around the model.  Some of the other shots were done with a beauty dish.  We even broke out a fan for some of the shots.

High school senior location photography

High school senior location photography of a spring time second shoot for this Waterford teen.  We found some flowering fruit trees not to far from her home where the senior had two wardrobe changes.  It was in a park so she was OK with changing in the car.  We later went to the alley off Main street in Clarkston,  MI and did a couple natural light location portraits.

High school senior studio photography test session

I did this high school senior studio photography test session a couple years ago.  It was great to have a few clients, some family friends and some of my daughter’s friends come to the studio to test out a few ideas I had.  I did end up using a couple of the lighting situations in later shoots.  I tried out a couple different backgrounds, found some that worked, others that did not.  Worked on a couple lighting setups, played with the windblown look with a fan and tested out a new ring light.

Patriotic flag high school senior photography

This is just the first session for Olivia’s total shoot.  She needs a couple quick images for application to a couple military academy.  We will shoot the rest of her session at her local high school track.  A version of the portrait and maybe one with the American flag will go to her senator.

Senior pictures for Anna

Anna is a Clarkston MI resident attending Notre Dam Prep and we shot in and around Clarkson.  We started at Clarkston United Methodist church at the big white columns, where a few years earlier I photographed her sister.  The light was just perfect.  I was able to place Anna in shadow and the sun was illuminating the white doors with beautiful back light.  We then went down to the creek and had a lot of back-light with Anna walking in the water.  Next was Depot Park on the green bridge, shot some at the gazebo, with help from a local hipster, Anna with the dogs, Anna with her Mother and sister and then Anna walking the dogs.  We then went into town on Main Street and had Anna walk down the middle with very courteous drivers.  We finished the evening with shots right by the old Clarkston State Bank Building.

Senior Pictures studio, field and lake

Senior pictures of a Traverse City high school student.  We started in the studio with some glamour lighting with a sparkle background.  As always, she was a little tentative with being photographed at first and you can see, she quickly warmed up and looked much more comfortable and genuine.  I even got a great smile and genuine laugh with the hair blowing in her face.

We later moved to the barn (yes the back corner of our barn is painted orange) and fields by the studio.  The sun was in the perfect position for the strong back-lighting.  The rest of the shots were done at her Aunt’s lake house.
